Terminal tackle

  • Swivels: strong, good quality (e.g. Power black swivel) - # 5 (light), # 3 (medium), # 1 (heavy). Ball bearing swivels are not necessary.
  • Clips/snaps: strongest available, not recommended for all types of lure fishing. Avoid the safety-pin type clips.
  • Sinkers: ball/egg/olive running sinkers - 1½ oz, 2oz, 3oz and grapple sinkers for surf fishing - 2oz, 3oz, 4oz.
  • Hooks: Mustad Demon Circle hook 39952BL (or similar shape and gauge) - #12/0, #10/0. Mustad Big Gun 10829BLN - #4/0, #6/0, #80. Gamakatsu SC15-2H # 5/0.
  • Leader material: clear nylon – 0.75mm (light), 1mm (medium), 1.5mm (heavy); nylon or carbon coated stainless steel – 60lb, 90lb (piano wire and bare cable are not permitted as these products tend to damage the fish).
  • Balloons or condoms (used as floats from the boat or beach).
  • Elastic bands (used to attach balloons or tie a sinker stop-knot on the leader when bait fishing over a foul bottom.)
