Reels and lines

Balance your rod with a suitable, quality reel that most importantly has a smooth drag. Do not place a spinning reel on a rod designed for multipliers, or vice versa, this is not an efficient combination.
Spool your reel with new line. Avoid low diameter-high breaking strain lines, these are not resistant to abrasion or inertial shock and will not withstand the stresses of tropical sportfishing. A thicker ‘weaker’ line is better than a thinner ‘stronger’ line. If you must opt for one of the new-generation, ultra-thin lines, choose a line based on its diameter and not its breaking strain.
