Research and Monitoring
In December 2003, satellite tracking collars were attached to six elephants, and this will be followed up with at least six more during mid-2004. Together with monitoring, individual recognition, etc., this is a joint project with the Smithsonian Institution and aims to better understand the population dynamics and especially the seasonal movements of elephants in and around the park. The latter has important conservation implications, in that during the dry season many elephants move beyond the park’s borders. |
